Mayor Edinho participated in the opening of the 13th edition of the Municipal Health Conference, on Wednesday night (25), and highlighted the importance of the SUS (Unified Health System) in ensuring a fairer and more egalitarian Brazil.
The conference, which this year had the theme “The SUS is ours – In defense of the Unified Health System in the post-pandemic”, brought together more than 300 people through an online platform and was broadcast on YouTube from the City Hall.
“This conference takes place at a very important time, as the pandemic is causing the greatest humanitarian tragedy in the history of Brazil and one of the greatest tragedies in the entire world. In Araraquara, we have been in place since March 2020 with the structure set up for testing, hospitalization, and patient reception. Vaccination is advancing. We overcame very difficult times by doing what science and medicine said should be done,” said Edinho.
“Looking ahead, the conference will tell us the guidelines for the SUS system in the next period. It is an important and fundamental space for dialogue. There will not be a fair Brazil with equal opportunities without the SUS present in every region of the country”, added the mayor.
The president of the Municipal Health Council, Haroldo Campos, thanked the City Hall for the partnership in organizing the conference. “This council, from the beginning, supports innovative projects that encourage social control and Health itself to advance. Today is a very important day. I greet everyone present at this 13th Municipal Health Conference”, he highlighted.
Representing the Chamber, councilor Filipa Brunelli (PT) congratulated the organization of the event. “I congratulate you for holding a plenary of this size in a virtual and so well organized way. We must always fight for the defense of the Unified Health System. Who protects the population in the most terrible hours, as we are now with the pandemic, is the SUS ”, she declared.
State deputy Márcia Lia (PT) also greeted the participants of the event. “At this moment of so much difficulty, this conference is essential to be able to dialogue and encourage popular participation. I wish you all a good conference,” she said.
Also participating in the conference were councilor Paulo Landim (PT); the Secretary of Health, Eliana Honain; the secretary of Human Rights and Popular Participation, Amanda Vizoná; the coordinator of Evaluation and Control of the Health Department, Edivaldo Trindade, who mediated the conference; among other municipal managers and the Health teams.

The proposals approved at the event will form the Final Report of the Conference, which will act in line with other planning instruments such as the Multiannual Plan, for example. In other words, it will be a guide for the Municipal Health Council to monitor and verify how the actions and functioning of Health in the city are being carried out.
Brazil has stood out in the world for its ability to organize and hold national thematic conferences bringing together civil society and public authorities in the same space. We are a continental country, with immense regional, social, cultural, racial, ethnic, religious and organizational diversity.
In the last 14 years, more than fifty national conferences were held, which were attended by more than 5.5 million delegates who were elected and participated in the municipal, state and national stages. The public power has its designated delegations.Some of these conferences draw more attention because of their originality or because they bring up serious complaints and demand solutions to problems that affect the whole of society and/or contradict interests.
One example was the First Communication Conference: A means for building guidelines and citizenship in the digital age, which took a long time to be convened, whicha was resisted by the major media, although extremely important for democracy.
The holding of the First LGBT Conference caused many debates in civil society and in the three powers about the need and importance of its holding. It was a great success in terms of mobilization and participation, with the presence of President Lula, ministers and representatives from other countries.
The Human Rights Conferences guide debates, guide public policies and bring up themes that affect the life of our Country, such as the 11th Human Rights Conference that updated the National Human Rights Program and brought in an incisive way the Right to Memory, as a fundamental human right.
This has been the case since 1930, when the first Health Conference was held, which continued and has contributed to the construction of health policy in Brazil, in which the Unified Health System (SUS) is an example. The most important product is mobilization in society, which is carried out by councils, class entities, social movements, NGOs, parties and churches. The conferences also affect entities and institutions that intend to represent certain social segments, as there are thousands expressing themselves and exercising their own citizenship.
Thus, the Conferences on Women, Persons with Disabilities, Elderly Persons, Assistance, Education, Racial, Children and Adolescents, Traditional Communities, Culture, Security and others contribute to democracy in Brazil and Espírito Santo.
