The topics of the 2nd SoNorA University Think Tank conference are:

• Infrastructure between the Adriatic and the Baltic Sea
• Transeuropean Networks of Transport in Central Europe
• Simulation and modelling, forecasting and infrastructure

The papers are dealing with the opportunities and challenges of an improvement of the south-northwards oriented infrastructure in the area between the Adriatic and the Baltic Sea. The possibilities of a realisation of specific railway sections are discussed as well as the role of the European instrument of Transeuropean networks on the development of transport
infrastructure in Central Europe. Furthermore, aspects of the harbour-hinterland connection of ports, the inclusion of certain regions in the south-north network as well as the freight transport demand are analysed by the authors.

European Train Control System defines standards for future train control systems, allowing direct services between different member states in Europe. But due to the high costs of their implementation these approaches in the first step focus on long distance services and bilateral solutions are needed for regional railway services which for financial reasons cannot fulfill these requirements on a short and mid-term basis. This study focuses on such bilateral solutions especially for the German-Polish border. Nevertheless similar problems occur between other member states as well and therefore a transfer of experiences can be useful for other regions as well.
